Written and directed by Claude Lelouch, A Man and a Woman (Un homme et une femme) is a 1966 French film starring Anne Gauthier (Anouk Aimée) and Jean-Louis (Jean-Louis Trintignant). The film is about a chance meeting of a young widow and widower who had a fling relationship 20 years ago complicated by the memories of their deceased spouses. Rally racer Jean-Louis arrives in Deauville and finds Anne on the beach. They run into each other's arms and embrace and ended in passionate lovemaking. But, Anne is still haunted by the thoughts of her husband and Jean-Louis feels guilty-thinking of his long-gone wife.

Director Claude Lelouch stated that the story for A Man and A Woman originated from a long drive on the shore at Deauville, where he slept for a few hours in the car. Awakened by the sunrise, his sight of a woman walking on the beach with her daughter and a dog sparked his creativity which led to the story and script which he co-wrote with Pierre Uytterhoeven.

In 1966, the filmmaker achieved prominence with hA Man and A Woman being the 6th highest-grossing film of the year and awards, including the Palme d'Or at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival, two Golden Globe Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actress - Drama (for Aimée), as well as two Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay. The film’s lush photography in full color, black-and-white, and sepia-toned shots with Francis Lai’s memorable musical score was selected for screening part at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
