film/art
offers a selection of the finest original film posters from the past fifty
years, from well-known classics like "All About Eve" and "The
Godfather" to less familiar cult and international titles. While our collection
inevitably reflects our own tastes in films and poster design, a broad range of
genres, actors, directors, countries and sizes are represented. Some of our favorites include the works of designer Saul Bass, the films of Steve McQueen and the James Bond series. Each poster,
without exception, is an original. We do not sell any reproductions of any
kind, and completely guarantee each poster's authenticity.
We have tried to make our website as user-friendly as possible, and we welcome
your feedback. Our goal is to make the site as fun to use and explore as
it has been for us to create and maintain. For those who have had little
previous experience with film posters, we will attempt to clarify a few
issues below. If you have any questions which are not answered or addressed
here, please don't hesitate to contact us. And if you are looking for
something that you don't see here, let us know -- chances are, we can find
it.

SIZES
& RELEASE DATES
We have included, on the search page, a search-by-size function. This
pull-down list includes most of the different sizes available, and ALL SIZES ARE GIVEN IN INCHES. Please
note that the sizes are to be used as a general guide and that individual
posters vary. For example, the 1 Sheet size -- the most common format --
usually measures 27x41 or 27x40 in the United States, while a corresponding
Spanish 1 Sheet is usually 27x39, an Argentine 1 Sheet is 29x43, etc.
Also be aware that most 3 Sheet (41x81 inches) and 6 Sheet (81x81 inches) posters are comprised of two, three
or four separate pieces that fit together.
The date of most posters
is that of the film's original release in whatever territory the poster
was used. If the poster is for a re-issue engagement, we have included
the letters 'RI' after the date given. Occasionally, (most often with
foreign posters), the release dates are more difficult to identify. In
these cases we will be as specific as possible - for example: 1970s RI.
CONDITION
We have included a brief description of each poster's condition, according
to the following scale:
Mint: An unused poster,
free of any noticeable defects.
Near Mint: No obvious signs of wear, beyond fold lines or minor creasing.
Very Fine/Excellent: Lightly used; may have fold lines, pinholes and/or minor creasing.
Fine: May have fold separation, fold wear, small tears and/or creasing
Very Good: Obviously used; may have heavy fold or corner wear and/or tears.
Good: Heavily worn poster; possible loss of paper.
These grades are meant
to give a general description of each poster's condition; more detailed
information, or images, may be requested for any poster. Please note that
the vast majority of all posters before the mid-1980s were sent to theatres
folded.
LINEN-BACKING
Many of the posters we offer have been preserved by a method referred
to as linen-backing. This refers to a conservation and restoration process
in which the poster is soaked in a deacidification agent, cleaned and mounted
to an acid-free paper which is then mounted onto a heavy linen fabric.
When dealing with heavier stock posters such as inserts and half sheets,
this final step is usually omitted, while the acid-free paper used is
generally heavier stock. This process is known as paper-backing.
There are a number
of benefits to linen or paper-backing: the poster is kept from further
deterioration due to acidification, it is less fragile to handle and it
displays much better. Furthermore, any number of restorative fixes may
be performed during the process to enhance the posters appearance, from
touching up fold lines to repairing small holes to replacing missing paper.
When done skillfully, the results can be extraordinary, giving old, even
heavily damaged posters a near mint, like new appearance. However, this
can also make it difficult to discern the poster's original condition.
Therefore, if asked -- and whenever possible -- we will explain the type and extent of any
restoration done. As a rule, do not sell heavily restored or reconstructed
posters.
SEARCH TIPS
When searching by title, always omit any articles such as 'the' and 'a'. When searching for multi-word titles, it is faster and more reliable to pick only one 'keyword' to enter. For example, instead of 'The Thomas Crown Affair', simply enter 'Crown'; instead of 'From Russia with Love', enter 'Russia'. When searching by Actor/Actress/Director, first try the pulldown fields at the right. If you cannot find the name you are looking for there, use the blank fields to the left - but enter only the persons last name. So 'McQueen', not 'Steve McQueen'; 'Hitchcock', not 'Alfred Hitchcock'.
When searching by title, please note that in most cases foreign posters are listed under the film's english title. However, some films (e.g. 'Le Boucher', 'Tout Va Bien') had titles which were not translated into english, or are simply better known in their original form. In such cases, they will be listed accordingly.
An 'Origin' search is also available. Please note that this refers to the posters, not films. In many cases, the country-of-origin for the film and poster are the same; however, the prevalence of international co-productions and the nature of artistic collaboration make many films' true nationality difficult to discern.
ORDERING
Because our posters are one of a kind, we do not offer online purchasing.

RETURNS
If you are not 100% satisfied with any part of your purchase, you may return it within seven days of receipt for a complete refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs). Just contact us to let us know what you will be returning, package it in the same materials in which you received it and send it within 7 days of your receipt of the poster(s).
