Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot, often referred to by her initials B.B., is a French actress, singer, and animal rights activist. She was born on September 28th, 1934 in Paris, France. Her father had an engineering degree and used to work with his own father in the family business. Brigitte's mother was the daughter of an insurance company agent who encouraged her to take up music and dance, and Bardot proved to be very proficient at it. By the time she was 15, Brigitte tried a modeling career and found herself in the French magazine "Elle”. Her films drew audiences--mainly men--into theaters like lemmings because of her explosive sexuality that took the United States by storm, and the effect she had on millions of American men who had not seen a woman like her in a long, long time--if ever--was electric. She was famously known to be the "sex kitten".

She was a strongly dedicated animal rights activist and a major opponent of the consumption of horse meat. She condemned seal hunting in Canada during a visit to that country in support of animal protection. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society renamed its fast interceptor vessel, MV Gojira, as MV Brigitte Bardot in appreciation of her support on May 25th, 2011.

Her accusations to the Chinese for “torturing bears and killing the world's last tigers and rhinos to make aphrodisiacs" pushed her to write a letter to Chinese President Jiang Zemin, published in French magazine VSD in 1999.

She also donated more than $140,000 over two years for a mass sterilization and adoption program for Bucharest's stray dogs, estimated to be a number around 300,000.

After filming The Edifying and Joyous Story of Colinot (1973), Bardot retired from movies just before she turned 40. She prefers life outside of stardom, so the act of becoming internationally famous also carried annoyances. The beauty went on to become a leading spokesperson for more animal rights organizations and started the "Foundation Brigitte Bardot" dedicated solely to that cause. Her work in that field is, perhaps, far greater than any film she could have made. Brigitte married Bernard d'Ormale in 1992 and they reside in St. Tropez with their nearly 50 pets.
