    Science fiction or sci-fi genre films uses speculative, fictional science-based phenomena with futuristic elements or technologies often been used on political, social and philosophical issues. The genre started when Georges Melies' A Trip to the Moon (1902) which employed trick photography effects, Metropolis (1927), Stanley Kubrick's landmark 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and many more.

    Science fiction films explored the theme of paranoia such as THX 1138 (1971), Logan's Run (1976), box office hits Star Wars (1977), the 1979, Star Trek and the worldwide success for sequels to Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) and Return of the Jedi (1983) along with James Cameron's The Terminator (1984), which presented the aliens and androids in the future.

    Meanwhile, disaster films emerged like Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), The Lawnmower Man (1992), and The Matrix (1999), Armageddon and Deep Impact, both 1998, Independence Day (1996), Jurassic Park (1993) and Gattaca (1997). Film makers enhance the quality of animation with the rise of software development resulting in films as Ghost in the Shell (1995) from Japan, and The Iron Giant (1999) from the United States. In 2005, the Star Wars saga was completed (followed by the release of Transformers (2007) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009). Director James Cameron's Avatar (2009) became the highest-grossing movie of all time. Many more films followed de Attack the Block (2011), Source Code (2011), Looper (2012), Upstream Color (2013), Ex Machina (2015), and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017).
