Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is a 1971 magnificent, creative family film directed by Mel Stuart. The film stars Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. The musical film is an adaptation of the novel by Roald Dahl in 1964's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

It is about the story of a poor but buoyant boy, Charlie Bucket, who dreams of getting one of the five golden tickets that will send him to see Willy Wonka's mysterious chocolate factory up-close. He receives a golden ticket and visits the factory along with other children from around the world.

Although Dahl was credited with writing the film's screenplay, due to some changes and other decisions made by the director, Dahl disowned the film.

The film was released on June 30, 1971, by Paramount Pictures. By the end of its original run, the film received generally positive reviews and earned $4 million. The film also launched the song "The Candy Man", which became a hit when recorded by Sammy Davis Jr. Numerous artists made a cover of the song.
